(4.0 × 4 + 3.3 × 3 + 3.7 × 3 + 3.0 × 3) ÷ 13 = 3.54. Each grade’s points are multiplied by its credits, summed, then divided by total credits.
About GPA
Grade point average converts letter grades into numbers so courses with different credit loads can be combined fairly. On the standard US 4.0 scale an A is 4.0, B is 3.0, C is 2.0, D is 1.0 and F is 0, with plus and minus grades stepping by roughly 0.3.
Formula: GPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours.
Some schools weight honours or AP courses on a 5.0 scale, and some don't use plus/minus at all. This calculator uses the unweighted 4.0 scale with plus/minus, which is what most colleges compare against; check your transcript if your school does something different.
Common questions
- How is GPA calculated?
- Each letter grade has a point value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on). Multiply each course's points by its credit hours, add them up, and divide by the total credit hours.
- What is a good GPA?
- In the US, 3.0 is generally considered solid and 3.5 or above is strong. Many graduate programmes and scholarships set a 3.0 minimum.
