(12 + 15 + 18 + 15 + 22 + 9) ÷ 6 = 15.1667. The median is the middle value once sorted; the mode is the value that appears most.

About Average

"Average" usually means the mean, but three different summaries are useful depending on the data, so the calculator shows all of them.

Mean: add everything up and divide by the count. Sensitive to extreme values — one huge number drags it up.

Median: sort the list and take the middle value (or the mean of the two middle values for an even count). Better for skewed data like incomes or house prices.

Mode: the value that occurs most often. The only average that works for categories, and the only one that can have several answers or none.

The range (largest minus smallest) and standard deviation describe how spread out the numbers are; the standard deviation here is the population version, dividing by n rather than n − 1.

Common questions

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value when sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often. The median is less affected by extreme values than the mean.
Which average should I use?
Use the mean for evenly spread data, the median when there are outliers (like house prices or incomes), and the mode for categories or the most common result.
