About Marks to Percentage
Converting marks to a percentage puts results from papers with different totals on the same scale, which is what most boards, universities and job applications ask for.
Formula: percentage = marks obtained ÷ total marks × 100. For 432 out of 500 that is 432 ÷ 500 × 100 = 86.4%.
To combine several subjects, add up all the marks obtained and divide by the sum of all the totals — don't average the individual percentages unless every paper carries the same total. The grade bands shown (90 / 80 / 70 / 60 / 50 / 40) are the most common cut-offs; your institution's mark sheet is the authority on which letter applies.
Common questions
- How do I convert marks to percentage?
- Divide the marks you obtained by the total marks available and multiply by 100. For example 432 out of 500 is 432 / 500 x 100 = 86.4%.
- Can I combine several subjects?
- Yes. Add up the marks obtained across all subjects and divide by the sum of their totals, rather than averaging each subject's percentage, unless every subject has the same total.
