About Date Difference
The difference between two dates depends on what you count. The calculator gives the plain calendar-day gap, the same span as weeks plus days and as years, months and days, and the number of working days.
Days: a straight count of midnight-to-midnight steps, so 1 January to 3 January is 2 days. Tick "include the end date" to count both ends (3 days) — the convention for hotel stays, leave requests and rentals.
Working days: Monday to Friday only. Public holidays differ by country and aren't excluded, so subtract any that fall inside your range.
Years, months, days: stepped through the calendar rather than divided by 30 or 365, so 31 January to 1 March is 1 month and 1 day.
Common questions
- Does the count include both dates?
- By default the difference is measured from the start date to the end date, so 1 to 3 January is 2 days. Tick "include end date" to count it as 3.
- How are working days counted?
- Working days are Monday to Friday. Public holidays vary by country and are not excluded, so subtract any that fall in your range.
