Each formula is a base weight for 5 ft plus a fixed amount per inch above it. Devine, for example: 50 + 2.3 × 8.9 = 70.5 kg. The headline number averages all four.
About Ideal Weight
"Ideal body weight" formulas were created as quick clinical estimates, mostly for drug dosing and insurance tables, before body composition was easy to measure. Each one gives a base weight for a height of 5 ft and adds a fixed amount per inch above that.
Formulas (men / women, kg): Devine 50 / 45.5 + 2.3 per inch · Robinson 52 / 49 + 1.9 / 1.7 per inch · Miller 56.2 / 53.1 + 1.41 / 1.36 per inch · Hamwi 48 / 45.5 + 2.7 / 2.2 per inch.
None of them accounts for frame size, muscle or age, which is why the results are shown side by side with the healthy BMI range rather than as a single target. Treat the spread as a reasonable zone, not a goal to hit exactly.
Common questions
- Which ideal weight formula is best?
- None is definitive. The Devine formula is used for drug dosing, Robinson and Miller were derived from insurance data, and Hamwi is the oldest. Looking at all four together gives a sensible range rather than one number.
- Why do the formulas only use height and gender?
- They were built as quick clinical estimates before body composition was easy to measure. Frame size, muscle mass and age all matter, which is why the healthy BMI range is also shown.
